Barely a month after Taylor Swift and The 1975 frontman Matty Healy were confirmed to be dating in the wake of her April breakup from actor Joe Alwyn, the musicians’ nascent romance ended, TMZ reported on June 5. According to the webloid, a friend close to the situation confirmed that Taylor was “single” again, though didn’t explain why the pair — who were spotted together on her “Eras” tour as well as in Nashville and New York City during May — had ended things. People magazine also confirmed a split. “She had fun with him, but it was always casual,” a source told the magazine. “They are no longer romantically involved.”
A source told “Entertainment Tonight” that the pair were simply both “extremely busy” and said they “realized they’re not really compatible with each other,” adding that “Taylor’s friends want what’s best for her and aren’t shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship.”
Page Six, meanwhile, reported that Taylor’s brief romance with Matty was simply her way of having some fun following her “stifling” relationship with Joe. “She’s allowed to let off some steam and [sow] her oats afterwards without people claiming first that she’s ‘head over heels’ and then that she’s ‘breaking up’ with the guy. It’s not a breakup. It’s a natural evolution of a fun little thing whose moment is over,” said an insider, who further claimed, “She will not be writing albums about this one. It was a summertime thing. Does everyone have amnesia about [her whirlwind summer 2016 fling with] Tom Hiddleston? Jesus Christ.”
Throwing a wrench in all the reporting, however, was Instagram gossip account Deux Moi, which in the wake of split reports claimed the pair were not over and would likely spend time together again once their “logistical problems” — Taylor was continuing to tour in America while The 1975 had tour obligations in Europe — came to their natural conclusions.
